Deviation Day 10: Barcelona

Not much to do in the grand scheme of today, but I will let you know how it all went!

We were very tired from our night on the town in Valencia last night so we slept in a bit late and had to rush out to the bus station. We got our breakfast, packed everything up and headed to the bus station almost as soon as we had eaten to catch our bus. There really wasn’t much more to do in the city so we were happy to get a bus that left an hour earlier so that we could have some more time in Barcelona. We only had to walk a few hundred meters to our bus station so it was not that bad and we arrived in plenty of time ready to go. Our bus ride was a bit long (4 hours) so we first decided to try to watch a movie but we eventually fell asleep.

I woke up to some beautiful views of the rolling Spanish hills and a bright blue, cloud-dotted sky, and green trees outside the window and it brought everything back into perspective. I hadn’t done much that was typically Spanish in Valencia so this sight inspired me to see everything that was left in Spain because it is still awesome and full of charm.

Now, onto something completely different! After arriving in Barcelona we walked the few kilometers to our hostel and dropped everything in our room. This hostel was not the most tidy and was definitely what I had pictured as the typical hostel. I think overall the quality of our hostels was fairly high everywhere else and we were finally seeing just what we would be experiencing for the money we had paid. The room was cramped with beds, there was no space to store bags, and the bathrooms were small and spread out, but we made it work and we were, after all, right on La Rambla, so the location definitely took precedence over the niceness of the hostel.

Our next priority was food. We noticed that Barcelona had a much higher population of Asian people than other cities that we had been to before so we decided to go get some Japanese food. We actually found a buffet for 14.50Euros and, of course, we enjoyed what we ate very much! The buffet had some great things to eat and even offered a fresh grill section and a Mongolian barbecue. Needless to say, we had never had a buffet that prodigious on the trip just yet so it was a welcome change.

We were literally left powerless by the delicious food and we were forced to take a recuperative siesta before we could do anything. We then pointed our steps in the direction of the Pablo Picasso museum and saw some of the cities sights on the way over. It was a pleasant walk and we enjoyed seeing the life of this famous artist laid out. Particularly interesting was the fact that he was so integrally related to the city of Barcelona. Aside from Gaudi, Picasso was one of the very formative people for this part of Spain and the Catalan people. Here are some photos of the city and the museum.

Our sight-seeing satisfied for the day as well as our stomachs from the Japanese food, we decided to retire and prepare to make tomorrow a great full day in the big city of Barcelona!
